Biography

Ireland Native
Robert Taylor was born in Ireland.
Robert was a labourer

Birth
Robert Taylor was born in 1831 in the Parish of Kilmore in County Down, Ireland. He was the son of John Taylor, a weaver, and Mary [Unknown].

The Famine Years (1845-1852)
Robert was a teenager during the years of the Irish Potato Famine. We cannot know for sure how he and his family were affected by the famine. The years after the famine were ones of economic decline in much of Ireland, as the population continued to contract. For example, Crossgar’s population (in the parish of Kilmore) in 1851 was 860 persons, but this would be a high mark. It would not surpass this number until 1971. [1] Robert was working as a labourer in Crossgar at the time of his marriage in 1855.

Kilmore Parish Church 1692-1870

Marriage
On the 28th of December 1855, Robert Taylor, a 24-year-old bachelor labourer from Crossgar, married 20-year-old Margaret Robinson, a spinster from Kilmore. They were wed in the Kilmore parish church by Rev. John Mussen according to the rites and ceremonies of the United Church of England and Ireland. Robert's father was listed as John Taylor, a weaver. Margaret's father was listed as George Robinson, also a weaver. Their witnesses were Margaret's sister Maria Robinson and her future husband William McCalla. Their marriage was registered in the Downpatrick registration district. [2]

Robert and Margaret would have eleven children together over the next 25 years. Four of their children born in the 1870s died in infancy. Their last child was born in 1880. Their known children were:

  1. Lizzie Taylor (born 1858)
  2. George Robinson Taylor (born 1860)
  3. Robert Hugh Taylor (born 1861)
  4. Mary Jane Taylor (born 1863)
  5. William John Taylor (born 28 March 1864) [3]
  6. Rachel Gray Taylor (born 21 March 1867) [4], died at age two
  7. Thomas James Taylor (born 6 February 1870) [5], died at age five
  8. Rachel Elizabeth Taylor (born 17 July 1872) [6], died before second birthday
  9. Margaret Taylor (born 5 July 1875) [7], died in infancy
  10. Anna Maria Taylor (born 8 March 1878) [8]
  11. Thomas James Taylor (born 23 July 1880) [9]

From 1855 to 1890, Robert lived with his wife and children in Kilmore where he worked as a labourer. This according to Robert’s marriage record, birth records for his children and his own death record,

There is a Robert Taylor in the "Griffith's Valuation" which surveyed County Down in 1863-64. The land record shows Robert Taylor renting land (house, office, yard and small garden) from James Davison in the Village of Kilmore, in the parish of Kilmore (parcel 12), valued at £1, 15s. annual rent. [10] There is a Robert Hutton on same record in the next property (parcel 13). This was perhaps Robert's brother-in-law, husband of Eliza Robinson.

Robert's father John Taylor died from heart disease at Christmas in 1871. His father's death record states that he was a 75-year-old widower and weaver from Kilmore. Margaret Taylor of Kilmore, was the informant, present at death. This could have been a daughter or his daughter-in-law, Robert's wife Margaret (Robinson) Taylor.

The next generation
Robert and Margaret's son George Taylor worked as a baker in Kilmore village. He married in 1881. [11] George and his wife had four children before his wife passed away in 1888. George remarried in 1889, but his second wife died a short two years later from kidney disease. [12]

Robert and Margaret's son Robert Hugh Taylor emigrated to the United States in about 1881 where he married and had two sons. He returned to Ireland with his wife and sons before the birth of a daughter in 1888. He worked as a grocer in Kilmore from 1889 to 1895 before turning to farming in nearby Tullynacree townland in the parish of Kilmore.

William John Taylor emigrated to the United States, like his brother Robert Hugh. Both he and his future wife are witnesses on the 1883 New Jersey marriage record of his brother. William married in 1886 in the same church in Jersey City as Robert Hugh. A son born in 1887 died the following year. They had another son in 1889 who lived a long life in New Jersey.

Robert and Margaret's daughter Mary Jane Taylor married in 1885. [13] She and her husband would remain in Kilmore village and have eight children, five of whom would survive to adulthood.

Death
Robert passed away from years of chronic bronchitis in 1890. His daughter Lizzie Taylor of Kilmore was the informant for his death record. Robert was survived by Margaret, his wife of 35 years, seven of his children and 13 grandchildren (at the time). Robert's death was registered in the Downpatrick registration district. [14]
