28 December 1915, Lewis enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force; Service number: 6371[2]. He was assigned to the 15 Reinforcements 2 Field Company Engineers later transferred to 1 Field Company, set sail aboard HMAT A26 Armadale on 20 March 1916 for service in France, attained the rank of Sapper, returned to Australia aboard the Soudan (12 May 1919-26 June 1919) and was discharged on 13 August 1919.

Lewis died on 13 October 1970 in Heidelberg, Victoria, Australia
