Michael was born in the Karitane Maternity Hospital attached to Hamilton (Waikato) Hospital, on 8th September 1953. He is the son of Roy Tarr & Leona McLaughlan

The family were living at Odette street near the hospital at the time. The family moved to Thames sometime after 1955 and after his younger sister was born. Life in Thames was special with many memories. In 1960 Mother Lee and the 5 siblings moved to Waitara in Taranaki after the split of the parents in Thames. I traveled to Thames 3 times a year growing up, and spent my holidays with my dad. He and I had a great relationship over many years, and we even worked together for some of those intermediate years. I trained as a Motor Mechanic but hated it and left once I qualified as a journeyman. I had gotten married in my last apprenticeship year and guess that impacted my thinking back then. No regrets about being a mechanic and I formed some lifelong friendships because of it. For some years I drove trucks and other machinery like bulldozers and forklifts and heavy loaders, to make a living. With my dad, I did a lot of chainsaw tree felling and harvesting in and around the greater Auckland Area, and the swamps of Hamilton too. Together we extracted a LOT of large (by Farm standards) tree plantations and wind breaks. A lot of the bigger trees were used in the board mills for plywood because of the girth and knot-free trunks we felled. I have worked variously as a salesman too. Later I trained as a Policeman, a job that was a huge ambition of mine. Thoroughly recommended to anyone to pursue. It meant the end of marriage #1 though. I returned to Auckland to work with my dad hauling bulk goods and again felling and carting trees for the mills. I got into computers after that and again really loved the work. I joined a large firm, UEB Industries and worked my way from Computer Operator (Mainframe) to Cobol (and other languages), before taking a short term role as a standards and operational textbook writer for their systems. Logic and math were my forte and I even taught computer studies at various Polytechnics (later). UEB Personnel dept then employed me as the Regional Training Manager for the wider Auckland Region, covering the Bay of Plenty, Waikato, and All the Auckland Factories and process plants UEB owned and operated. A diverse portfolio which I enjoyed. A company restructure saw my job change so I opted to move aside. I went back into Computer Work becoming a consultant in my own right operating out of an office in Pt Chevalier, building small to medium systems for businesses and joining the Polytechs as a tutor in Computer Studies. A shift to Tauranga saw that business sold. Tauranga was where I joined as a consultant, the Hospital Board, involved in the installing of a huge Inventory system for all product used in the Hospitals including the Pharmacies (drugs, etc) across Tauranga, Whakatane and Rotorua Sites (Part of the BoP Area Health Boards Operations back then). I bought and operated the Christian Bookshop "The Cornerstone" on Devonport Road near the Red Square, Tauranga. But one of the most rewarding occupations for me, was leading a small Christian Fellowship of 350 people. Life eh?

At the youngish age of 61 I had 6 Strokes in various parts my brain, which resulted in me being locked up inside my head for 2.5 years, not really understanding what was going on around me, and not able to cope with that life stimulation anyway. At the 2.5 year mark I stood up and started walking to get back my muscle mass. Strokes ended my then marriage.

I have 5 biological children and the memory of a step daughter too. Relationships huh!

But these days, I am happily single and retired, fishing from my kayak as often as I can through all seasons of the year.

Genealogy has become quite a consuming passion too, as I piece together my ancestors and their locations in the world. My dad never knew anything about and never met his own grandfather, and I have managed to put together some of his life history and told my dad some of that before he died. And the Wikitree journey continues...

My Tarr Ancestors originate from the Devon area in the United Kingdom, with many of those ancestors having lived and worked around Exmoor, Dulverton, Tiverton and some even from Yealmpton further South around Plymouth.
In my direct line there are farmers and farm workers, carpenters, Bricklayers, and even a Master Baker.
My McLaughlan Ancestors on my mothers direct line, hail from County Tyrone, Ireland.
My ancestors come from English, Irish, Scottish and even some Maori (NZ).

Hi Michael,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are usually shared by many descendants, collaborating with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus, whether time period, location, or topic. Review the project pages to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Can't find what you're looking for? Let me know, and I can make some suggestions! :-)

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).
