The whole situation needs further investigation. This may be a case in which the Merrill memorial is in error. It seems to be the John Merrill born 1743 (died 1828) son of Benjamin Merrill that married a Mary Stevens in 1770. A better solution may be to leave Mary as Mary Stevens but with undetermined parents. - Except that doesn’t explain her name at the birth of her son as Mary Emerson.

Maternal line mitochondrial DNA test-takers:
Although it is possible that Mary daughter of Isaac is the Mary Stevens that married John Merrill, there is no direct evidence of that. It is slightly more likely that Mary Stevens born 1739 daughter of Benjamin Stevens and Mary Poor is the spouse of John Merrill. There are two reasons to consider this. One, Mary the wife of John died in 1807 at age 68 which fits with Mary born in 1739. Second, the family of Isaac and Mary Stevens left Andover about 1762 when they sold all their property. It is not clear where the family went, but seem to have gone to Hillsborough County, New Hampshire.
