In 1843, Benjamin entered the Navy as a Captain's Clerk and was attached to the frigate Constitution under the command of Captain John Percival. During his three years term of service, he made cruises to Asia, Africa, and South America. An account by him of this journey was published in The United States Magazine and was reprinted in 1904. On 9 April 1847, Benjamin was elected secretary of the New England Mutual Life Insurance Company, the first company in the United States authorized to do a mutual life insurance business. In 1864, Benjamin was elected vice-president and a year later president of the company.[1][2]
Marriage and Children
Benjamin married Catherine Lincoln (1827-1909), the daughter of Ezra and Chastine (Hartwell) Lincoln on 26 June 1850 at Boston, Massachusetts.[3] They had four children born at Boston:

Death and Burial
Benjamin Franklin Stevens died on 10 April 1908 from bronchitis and kidney disease in his 84th year at Boston.[1][11][12]He is buried in Forest Hills Cemetery and Crematory at Jamaica Plain, Suffolk, Massachusetts.[13]

Benjamin Franklin Stevens was a Member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and has an obituary in the Journal in 1909.[1]
