Almost nothing is known about Mary "Valentine" Spalding's early life. The definitive source on Dutchess County settlers concludes that Daniel Odell married a daughter of Samuel Spalding, but has no additional sources on her identity or life. She married Daniel [1][2] possibly about 1753.[3] Daniel settled on 248-acre Lot 6 in Beekman, and joined the Dover Baptist Church on May 16, 1762.
Daniel was a Loyalist during the Revolutionary War, served in the Southern Campaign in Brigadier General Montfort Browne's Prince of Wales American Regiment from 1781 to 1783.[4] His land was confiscated during the Revolution, and the family left New York for Nova Scotia, where Daniel appears on a roll of discharged officers in Annapolis County in June 1784 with a household of himself, one woman (Mary), and two children in Clements Township, (now Hillsburgh Township), Digby County. [5] Mary died in March 1785 and is buried in the Thomas Cemetery in Smith's Cove, Digby, Nova Scotia.[6]
