The following is a potted family history,
I was born in Hobart Tasmania.
My father was also born in Hobart Tasmania.
His parents were Edward Claremont Smithurst and May Elizabeth Brittain. Edward "Mick" Smithurst's father William came to Tasmania in about 1890 where he joined his aunt Alice Smithurst and her partner William Cundy. The Smithurst family were from Mansfield in Nottinghamshire. Mick's mother was Annie Flood, daughter of William Flood, born in NSW and Elizabeth Lee from Geddington in Northamptonshire. William Floods parents were John Flood, son of Joseph Flood and Anne Gorman, Irish convicts; and Margaret Watson, son of John Watson and Esther Hacker. Esther was English and John's origins are unkown. Margaret's obituary says he arrived on the first ship dispatched to Australia - but no evidence for this can be found.
May Brittain was born in Garden Island Creek in Tasmania. Her family had been there for two generations. Her parents were Edmund Brittain and Jane Lancaster. Edmund was the son of James Brittain and Sarah Simmonds. Sarah's father was a William Simmonds a dealer but nothing further is known about him. James was the son of William Brittain and Ann Leader, both convicts. Ann was from Daptford and William possibly from Bristol.
Jane Lancaster was the daughter of James Lancaster, who arrived as a boy convict and Harriet Campbell. James came from Birmingham in Warwickshire, the son of John Lancaster and Sara Rose. Harriet was the daughter of James Campbell, from Scotland and Adelaide Rosealvena Van Schaick, probably born in Dublin, the apparent daughter of a soldier in the English army.
My mother was born in Grafton NSW. Her parents were Winifred McCartney and Wallace Brown. Winifed was born in Wingham, the daughter of Edward John McCartney, farmer and farmer and Rachel McDonald. Edward was the son of George McCartney, mariner and farmer and Maria Gordon. George was from Dover, Kent, the son of Richard McCartney and Catherine Marsh and Maria was from Northern Ireland, the daughter of James Gordon and Jane Wright. Rachel was the daughter of James McDonald from Dunfermline/Aberdour Fife Scotland and Jane Summerville. Jane was the daughter of Northern Irish immigrants Robert Summerville and Rebecca Armstrong from County Tyrone in Ireland. James, carpenter and ship builder on the Manning, was the son of Malcolm McDonald, mariner and quarry man and Margaret Paton from Fife.
Wallace Brown was descended from David Brown, convict, who became a landowner at Wilberforce in the early days of the colony and his wife Eleanor Fleming, daughter of Joseph Fleming a soldier in the NSW Corps. Their son Joseph Brown married Izetta Lisson, daughter of Thomas Lisson and Ann Bradwell. Both were convicts, Thomas from London, Ann from Manchester. Joseph and Izetta's son Joseph married Elizabeth Reed Casson. Elizabeth was born in Newcastle the daughter of blacksmith John Casson and his wife Sarah Reed who migrated to Australia from Cumberland. The Cassons had lived in Broughton in Furness, Lancashire for hundreds of years. Sarah Reed was the daughter of James Reed and Mary White from Whitehaven
