Biography
George Howard Smith was born about 1850 in Stukely-Sud, Memphrémagog, Quebec, Canada to Abner Smith and Alzina Montle.[1] The family relocated to Plainview, Wabasha, Minnesota by 1865.[2]
George married Ella May Abbott on January 11, 1875 in Wabasha County, Minnesota.[3] Ella and George had five children:
- Madge Maude Smith (1876-1958) m. William Clyde Hutchinson
- Herbert Clyde Smith (1879- ?) m. Mae Dolly Hutchinson
- Claude Merrill Smith (1880-1970)[4] m. Angeline Parker
- Robert Cole Smith (1883-1977) m. Leah Bell Gertrude Carns, Grace Lillian Fenton Hutchinson
- Georgia Ethel Smith (1884-1954) m. Walter Peter Mittelstadt, Ova Chamberlin
George died July 11, 1885 in Arlington, Brookings, South Dakota of “consumption” (tuberculosis). He passed away exactly a year and one day before the death of his wife, Ella. He is buried in Arlington Cemetery in Arlington, Brookings, South Dakota.[5]
