Newton is mentioned in a letter written by Gasua Fortenberry to his nephew, Jack Fortenberry, in 1862. Unfortunately, war takes away young men before they have a chance to marry and start a family. There is so very little information to be found about most of these men that WE, the extended family of these heroes, must tell their short life stories if we can.

From the above mentioned letter written to his cousin and the context with which the writer mentions Newton Smith's name, it is concluded that Jackson Fortenberry and Newton Smith were in the same company.

NOTE: Newton Oscar Smith died of Typhoid Fever while enlisted in the Army, 4 May 1862. This was only a few short days after his uncle, Gasua Fortenberry, wrote the letter to Jack.
