Biography

Margaret Smith was born about 1841 in St. John's Newfoundland. Little is known about her early life, but her maiden name was often given as "Smyth" or "Smythe."

Her birth date is taken from the birth dates of her children and the fact that this would have made her about 18 when she married Michael Francis Ellard on November 3, 1861, in St. John's. Michael was about five years her senior, and also a native of St. John's. He worked as a cooper.

Margaret gave birth to her last child, Genevieve "Jennie" Frances Ellard, later Coughlin, in April of 1887, and an 1841 birth date would mean she was about 44 at the time. Were she much younger than that, she would have been too young to marry in 1861, and she could not have been more than a few years older.

Margaret died not all that long after Jennie's birth, probably in 1890, and probably in St. John's. The surviving members of her family relocated to Boston the following year.

She passed away about 1890.
