Biography

William Smith was born about 1777 near Warm Springs, Virginia. William married Elizabeth McCallister in 1799 in Bath County Virginia. He was gifted property in the Sweet Springs area of Monroe County Virginia about 1802 by his Grandfather Samuel Logue. William is later living on Turkey Creek near modern day Zenith WV . Many of his children moved to other states. In 1850 his deceased son , Madison's wife Julia and her children, were living in his household. He died in 1854 in Monroe, Virginia.

Marriages

On 26 December 1799, William married Elizabeth McCallister, daughter of Thomas McCallister, in Bath, Virginia.[1] Surety was given on 23 December 1799 by John Rees, Thomas and Jane McClallister consented to the marriage and John Rees witnessed.

On 27 September 1821, William married Elizabeth Warren in Monroe, West Virginia[2]

Events

  • 8 May 1802: Samuel Logue gives his grandson William Smith 103 acres on Dunlaps Creek "adjoining the land on which Logue lives." The deed was witnessed by William McCallister who married Samuel's granddaughter Jane Logue, and John Logue, Samuel Logue's son-in-law. Research Notes

  • Very little is known about William Smith. Judging from his household on the 1810 census, he might have been a somewhat older widower. There is speculation that he was the William Smith who married in Monroe Co., Virginia, in 1821, but there is no proof. ~Janice McAlpine, FamilySearch Could the 1810 census and 1820 show him living in his father’s household?
  • It is possible that there were two William Smiths, one in Bath Co. and one in Monroe Co. because this William Smith was on the 1810 and 1820 census in Bath Co., but a William Smith, presumably of Monroe Co. was one of the appraisers for John Waters' estate in Monroe Co. in 1817. ~Janice McAlpine, FamilySearch
  • There were several William Smiths in Monroe County Virginia. This William Smith is

the William Smith that is mentioned in the 1850 in household of his deceased son Madison's Widow and her children. William is not listed in the 1860 Census and daughter in law is in her son's house hold.

Associated Families

I've been trying to sort out my Smith and associated ancestors from Monroe County West Virginia. My ancestor, Sarah Smith Allen daughter of William and Elizabeth McCallister Smith married her neighbor Nathaniel Allen. Several families lived near one another near the Small Community of Zenith, Monroe County West Virginia. The Families were Smith, Wray, Allen, Neil and Garten. The Smiths were associated with the Logue and McCallisters and many moved to Gallia, Lawrence Ohio and Mason County West Virginia. The Allens Gartens and others to Putnam Indiana. Members of these families again follow to Missouri. I have several old letters giving the names of the family members.
