Biography

Notables Project
Brod Smith OAM is Notable.
Flag of Hertfordshire (1925, adopted by county 2008)
Brod Smith OAM was born in Hertfordshire, England.

Broderick Smith was born in 1948, the son of Richard Smith and Millicent Stone. His birth was registered in the Mar 1948 quarter at Hatfield, Hertfordshire.[1]

He moved to Melbourne, Australia with his parents and younger brother in 1959 via the RMS Orion from Tilbury Docks. The family were part of the Assisted Passage Migration Scheme.[2]

Brod became a musician and actor. Starting with the Adderley Smith Blues Band in 1966, his career was interrupted by a stint of National Service. When he left the army in 1970 he formed country band Sundown, followed by blues and boogie band Carson in 1972 which achieved a major label deal with EMI/Harvest Records.

His next band, the Dingoes, signed with Mushroom Records in 1973 and released their debut hit Way Out West. This was followed by Broderick Smith's Big Combo from 1979-82. His career includes writing 200 songs and running workshops on songwriting, harmonica and vocals. According to his official website he has recorded with Cat Stevens, Jimmy Barnes, Steve Cropper, The Memphis Horns, Buffy Saint Marie, Phil Ochs, Ted Egan, Tommy and Phil Emmanuel, among others.

Apart from music, Brod also made a name for himself as an actor, appearing in the movies Newsfront and Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, as well as television appearances in The Sullivans and Blue Heelers.

In recognition of his contribution to Australian music, he was inducted—as a member of the Dingoes—into the Australian Record Industry Association's Hall of Fame in 2009, and was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his contribution to the Arts.[3]

He was a generous, kind and friendly man.

Brod passed away in 2023 at the age of 75.

  2. Note: Reported widely in the media. I haven't been able to find the passenger lists for 1959.
  3. Note: The Medal of the Order of Australia was reported by many media outlets, but I can't personally verify it because 1) none of them have listed the correct year it was awarded (it wasn't 2014), and 2) the Governor General's computer system is broken (*snigger*).

Hi Robert,

Thanks for looking after this Australian notable! I'm not sure if you're aware, but the Australia Project has recently changed their Australian Notables categories. We are now moving all the profiles currently under the Australia, Notables category to one or more of the sub-categories - see Australia, Notables category for the sub-categories and Australian Notables for information on how to include an Australian Notable category as part of the Notables sticker. You can also check if you have any other profiles that need moving from under this category by going to the category and choosing 'Limit to Watchlist' on the top RHS.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me,

Thanks so much! Gillian, co-Leader, Australia Project
