William Smith was born on 13 March 1811 in Royalton, Windsor County, Vermont. [1] [2] His parents were Joseph Smith and Lucy Mack. [3]

He went on a mission to Erie County, Pennsylvania in December 1832. [1]

He was living in Kirtland, Ohio in the winter of 1833. [1]

He married Caroline Grant on 14 February 1833. [1] They had two children:

  1. Mary Jane [1]
  2. Caroline L. [1]

He went to Missouri with Zion's Camp in 1834. [1]

He moved to Far West in 1838. [1]

His membership with the church was suspended on 4 May 1839. [1]

He moved to Plymouth, Hancock County, Illinois. [1] He kept a tavern there. [1]

His membership with the church was restored around 1840. [1]

He was elected a member of the House of Representatives of the Legislature of illinois in 1842. [1]

He entered into a polygamous marriage with the 15-year-old Mary Jane Rollins on 22 June 1845 in Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois. [4]

He was a member of the Council of Twelve Apostles from 15 February 1835 to 6 October 1845. [1]

He was excommunicated on 12 October 1845. [1]

He married Roxey Ann Grant, his first wife's sister, on 19 May 1847 in Knox County, Illinois. [5] They had the following children:

  2. Hiram Wallace b. 1850 [6]

He associated with James Strang and the Strangites, and then later with the RLDS Church. [1]

He married Eliza Sanborn on 12 November 1857 in Lake County, Ohio. [7] They had the following children:

He appeared in the 1860 US Census in Venango Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania. [11]

He appeared in the 1880 US Census in Boardman, Clayton County, Iowa. [13]

He married Rosa Jewitt on 21 December 1889 in Clinton County, Iowa. [3]

He was residing in Elkader, Clayton County, Iowa at the time of his marriage to Rosa. [3] [1]

He died on 13 November 1893 in Osterdock, Clayton County, Iowa. [1] [2] He was buried at Bethel Cemetery in Osterdock. [14]
