Moritz Richard Schomburgk was born in Freyburg, Saxony, the son of Johann Friedrich Ludwig Schomburgk (a Lutheran minister in Thuringia), and his wife Christiane Juliane Wilhelmine, née Krippendorf.

Schomburgk went on a Prussian-British expedition in 1844 to British Guyana and Brazil, led by his older brother Robert.

He emigrated from Prussia to South Australia in 1848 with his brother Otto in the Princess Louise, and became director of the Adelaide Botanic Garden in 1865.
He died in Adelaide on 24 March 1891, and was survived by a son and four daughters.

Director of the Botanic Gardens, was not altogether unexpected, for the highly esteemed scientist had been ailing for some years, and his friends knew that he could not last much longer.
Scientific men, wherever they locate themselves, are generally recognised as benefactors to the community at large, and in this relation we may safely include the late Dr. Richard Schomburgk, whose assistance in the production of the beautiful in nature was not only recognised in our own colony but by scientists and others in different parts of the world.

Window erected in memory of Richard & Pauline Schomburgk by their children, created by Montgomery & Grimbly, unveiled 25 Aug 1895 in St Paul’s church, Pulteney St.
When St Paul’s closed 1982, window was transferred to All Souls Anglican church in suburb of St Peters and re-dedicated 27 Oct 1985. Richard was the second director of Adelaide’s Botanic Gardens. . . . . more . . Wikipedia®
