Robert Robertson was born about 1814 and probably in North Berwick, East Lothian at Castleton Farm. He was the son of James Robertson and Christian Hope. He married Margaret Harper from Ancrum, Roxburghshire, 17 Nov 1838. They emigrated to South Australia on the sailing ship "Buckinghamshire" and arrived 21 March 1839, one of the band of colonists who arrived in the thirties. Robert and Margaret first settled near where Salisbury now is and then they went to Pewsey Vale. Leaving there, they moved to Gawler where they built the Old Bushman Hotel, and kept it for a time. Robert's farming operations were commenced at Angas Park and later on land purchased from the South Australian Company at Lyndoch Valley.They had three sons, all born in Australia. Robert died 9 Feb 1847 and is buried in the West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide City. An account of Robert's life can be found in his wife Margaret's Biography. [1]
