Charles moved to Alpena, Alpena County, Michigan in 1858.[3] He "became one of the pioneers in the development of the lumber industry in this section of the state, as a member of the firm of Avery, Murphy & Richardson, which conducted extensive lumbering operations for many years. The firm cut and sawed millions of feet of lumber and its members were among the influential factors in compassing the early stages in the development of northern Michigan, long known as one of the great timber reserves of the country."[3]
Charles, a "lumberman," died of an "abcess on [his] liver" in Pittsfield, Somerset County, Maine, 18 Jun 1886, at age 63.[4] He's buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, in Detroit, Michigan.[4]
