Private Daniel Rexford served in the United States Civil War. Enlisted: 3 Sept 1863 Mustered out: 24 Aug 1864 Side: USA Regiment(s): 20th NY Calvary
Daniel Rexford was born about 1803. He was the son of Artemus Rexford and Mary “Polly” (Mann) Rexford. In 1810, his family was in Hartford, Washington County, New York. [1]
In 1830, he had a family of his own and was living in Hartford, Washington County, New York. Unsourced family records indicate he married Jane Smith (1810-1842) and they had four daughters: Lydia, Lilly, Susan and Hanna, the last being born in 1837. [2]
He was described as a Cooper having a light complexion and being 5’-6 ¼” tall. In 1837, he was convicted of Grand Larceny in Onondaga County, New York, and served three years in Auburn State Prison, being discharged December 8, 1840. [3]
His second marriage was to Hannah Williams (1810-1874). [4]
In 1850 they were in West Monroe, Oswego County, New York. In 1860, they were in Somerville P. O., Rossie, Saint Lawrence County, New York. [5][6]
In August 1863, Daniel was a resident of Hammond, St. Lawrence County, New York when he enlisted at Sacketts Harbor as a Private in the 20th Cavalry. He was mustered in on September 3, 1863, was injured in early 1864 and died in a regional hospital that year.
Daniel served until Jan’y 64 when he was severely injured by the kick of a horse in the breast at Camp Gettys Va. of which he died the Aug foll’g at Norfolk Va where he was buried in Soldiers Cemetery. [7]
Dan’l Rexford died August 24, 1864 of sunstroke. He is buried in Hampton National Cemetery, Hampton, Virginia (Section D Site 2791). [8][9][10]
