Lucy was born about 1806. She was the daughter of Samuel Reed and Mary Benedict.[1] Various mentions of Lucy suggest that she was born either in Rensselaer County, New York or in Middletown, Delaware County, New York. The birth date of 1806 is derived from her census record. This would make her about age 17 at the birth of her first child. This is not unreasonable, but a bit young.
Lucy married first George R Moats. They likely married around 1822 in Jackson County, Ohio, based on the birth of their eldest child Ira Benedict Moats. About 1833, George moved his family to Peoria, then to Ogle County, Illinois.[1]
The 1830 census for Peoria and Putnam, Illinois includes George Moots/Moets/Moebs living near her father Samuel Reed. The household included 1 male under age 5 (Samuel), 2 males age 5-9 (Ira, Simon), 1 male age 20-29 (George) and 1 female age 20-29 (Lucy).[2]
George Moats apparently died about 1833 or 1834. He has a grave memorial, with no headstone, in the Brick Church Cemetery, Polo, Ogle County, Illinois; the locations and dates are questionable.[3]
Lucy married second Albion Sanford 30 Apr 1834 in Peoria County, Illinois.[4][5][6][7]
In 1850, she was living in Buffalo Township, Ogle County, Illinois.[8] The household included Albion Sanford age 45 born in New York, Lucy Sanford age 44 born in New York, Mary Sanford age 14 born in Illinois, Emily Sanford age 8 born in Illinois and Samuel Mats age 23 born in Ohio. Samuel was likely the son of Lucy and George Moats. Albion was a farmer with real estate valued at $2100. Mary and Emily attended school.
Her death is recorded in a family bible as Dec 1855.[9] This was most likely in Ogle County, Illinois.
She has a grave memorial with no headstone, cemetery location, or information about sources.[10] This memorial connects her with parents, spouses, children, and siblings. It also has her birthdate as 1806 in Rensselaer, Rensselaer County, New York and her death as Dec 1855 in Polo, Ogle County, Illinois.

Lucy Reed can be found in numerous online family trees including WikiTree, many (382) Ancestry Trees, and FamilySearch https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/K84T-PXK. These provide clues about possible locations and relatives but lack sources beyond those cited here.
Several families migrated from Delaware County, New York to Ogle County, Illinois, including Reed, Sanford, Osterhoudt, and more. There were many marriages among these families, both in New York and in Illinois. These families, their relationships, individual profile status and county histories are described on Ogle Illinois Reed/Sanford Space Page. Additional information can be found in the Historical encyclopedia of Illinois,[7] Boss's history of Ogle County,[11] The History of Ogle County, Illinois[12] and The history of Peoria County, Illinois[13].
The Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois, Vol 2, p. 1009 biography of the Sanford family[7] states that Albion Sanford married Mrs. Lucy Osterhoudt Moats. No evidence has been found that Lucy was ever an Osterhoudt. The Reed, Sanford and Osterhoudt families all moved from Delaware County, New York to Ogle County, Illinois. Albion's brother Joel married Jane Osterhoudt, and his brother Warren married Dolly Ann Osterhoudt. It is likely that the history has confused the families. Further research into the Osterhoudt families should confirm this.
