Joe Rantz was a notable American rower, an Olympic athelete who competed in the 1936 Summer Olympics, in the United States.

Joseph Harry Rantz was born about 1914 in Spokane, Washington. He was the son of Harry Alberson Rantz and Nellie Maxwell.^[1]

Joe Rantz was from a working-class family. His mother died when he was young. In 1920, after his mother's death, he was boarding, at age 5, while his father was absent.^[2] In 1930 he was living with his father and stepmother in Clallam, Wash. His father worked as a mechanic.^[3]

Joe Rantz attended the University of Washington, where he studied engineering. He excelled in crew rowing in college. He was a member of the University of Washington's crew that won a gold medal in the men's eight-oared shells with coxswain at the 1936 Summer Olympic Games on Lake Grunau in Germany. Trailing in last place at the 1,000-meter mark, the Huskies overcame a late start to defeat the Italian national crew by three feet in the final 1,000 meters. The Huskies representing the USA, established world and Olympic records over the 2,000-meter course, winning their qualifying race with a time of 6:00.86.^[4]
