Hugh Ramsay was born on 25th May 1877 in District of Gorbals, Lanarkshire, Scotland, United Kingdom. He was the fourth son of John Ramsay, a commercial traveller, and Margaret Thomson. [1]
The family migrated to Melbourne, Victoria (Australia) in 1878, settling in Prahran. In 1888, the family moved into the Clydebank mansion, in Essendon. Hugh was educated at Essendon Grammar School, and joined classes at the National Gallery of Victoria at sixteen years of age under Lindsay Bernard Hall and became one of the most brilliant students ever trained there, winning several first prizes.
Many of his works are held by art galleries across Australia, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Aged just 28 years, he passed away on 5th March 1906 in Essendon, Victoria. [2] The Herald published the following notice of death on the same day: [3]
