Biography

Thomas Peyton, Esq., younger son of Edward Peyton, Knt., 2nd Baronet, by his second wife, Jane Calthorpe,[1] was baptized 29 March 1617[2] or perhaps 11 April 1617 at Isleham, Cambridge.[3]

Thomas was admitted at Corpus Christi College, University of Cambridge, in 1634.[4]

Thomas's father was a Parliamentarian during the English Civil War. Thomas fought for the Royalists, and as a result was fined £338 by the Parliamentarians in 1646: this fine was halved in 1649.[5]

Baronetcy

In the civil wars, Thomas' father had "so impoverished himself that he ruined his whole estate and (probably) had to sell Isham". Sir Edward Peyton, 2nd Baronet of Isleham, Cambridgeshire, was succeeded by Thomas's brother John in 1652. before 3 December 1652, when his son Thomas referred to him as "late deceased".[5][6] In other records of 1652 Thomas is referred to as baronet, confirming that his father had died.[7] [8] John died about 1665 and was succeeded by his second son John, who died in 1720. After 1720, the baronetcy was assumed by Thomas' grandson, Yelverton Peyton (son of Thomas' son Charles), as cousin and heir male.[8]

Marriage and Children

Thomas married Elizabeth Yelverton, daughter of Sir William Yelverton,[1] 2nd Baronet, and Ursula Richardson.[2] The date of their marriage is unknown and is estimated based on the birth dates/order of their children. They had seven sons and two daughters:
  • William, Esq.,[2] of Dublin, died 1686, married Frances Lunsford and had no male issue[9]
  • Benjamin[2]
  • [Major] Robert,[9] Gent., born about 1640, died 15 March 1686, married Mary _____ and had issue; he immigrated to Virginia, was a lawyer and in 1680 was a major of the Gloucester County militia.[2] His grandson, John Peyton, succeeded to the title of knight baronet by failure of title in England.[10]
  • Charles,[2] married Elizabeth Bladwell and had 6 sons.[9] His son Yelverton Peyton assumed the baronetcy in 1720, as 5th Bart., following the death of his cousin, Sir John, 4th Bart.[8]
  • Yelverton, Esq.[2] baptized 7 May 1652 at Rougham, Norfolk[11]
  • Thomas,[2] married ____ Roberts[9]
  • Benjamin (again)[2]
  • Hannah[2]
  • Anne, wife of Thomas Woods, Esq.[2]
His wife was co-heiress in 1649 to her brother, William Yelverton, Knt., 3rd Baronet.[2]
According to his tombstone, Thomas remarried to the widow ____ Hacon.[12]

Death

Thomas died 12 October 1683[2] and was buried at Braconash, Norfolk.[4][1] His wife, Elizabeth, predeceased him 3 June 1668 and was buried at Rougham, Norfolk, leaving a will proved 9 February 1670.[2]
At Braconash, is the following inscription:
Peyton impales Yelverton. Here lieth the Body of Thomas Peyton, younger Son of Sir Edward Peyton Bart of Isleham in Cambridgeshire, by his second wife Jane, the Daughter of Sir James Calthorp of Basham in the County of Norfolk, widow of Edmund Thimblethorp; he had two wives, his first wife was the Daughter of Sir Will. Yelverton of Rougham in the county of Norfolk, who by the Death of Sir Will. Yelverton her Brother, without Issue, had Rougham for her Inheritance; she left 4 Sons and one Daughter. Thomas Peyton Esq appears in trails badged by the Magna Carta project (reviewed in August 2015) from his son, Gateway Ancestor Robert Peyton, to Magna Carta Surety Barons William d'Aubigné and Robert de Ros and was later identified in badged trails to surety barons Richard de Clare, Gilbert de Clare, John de Lacy, and Saher de Quincy. All of these trails are set out in the Magna Carta Trails section of the Gateway's profile.
See Base Camp for more information about identified Magna Carta trails and their status. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".
NOTE: Thomas is also a descendant of Hugh le Bigod and Roger le Bigod, through Philip Despenser, but that WikiTree trail has not been developed yet. Just four profiles - four generations of Philip Despensers - need to be developed/reviewed/approved to connect Margery (Despenser) Wentworth with Isabel Beauchamp, who is in an approved trail to the Bigods.

Would it be presumptuous to place Isleham, Cambridgeshire, England as birth/death location, given his history? Certainly, it could be marked uncertain.
posted by Porter Fann
Richardson doesn't give a birth or death place and calls Thomas "of Rougham, Norfolk", and calls his father, the 2nd baronet, "of Wicken, Cambridgeshire and Great Bradley, Suffolk". Wikipedia says Thomas's father sold Isleham after the civil war, but cites Cokayne's 1st edition. Anyway, there is no evidence of Thomas' place of birth or death. I did add England instead of leaving the birth/death place datafields blank.

Please feel free to do some research and find some sources so we can fill in the location places. It would be appreciated!
