Founded Perkins Brewery in Toowoomba.
Patrick Perkins was born at Ireland in 1838, the son of Thomas Perkins and Ellen Gooley. His parents emigrated to Melbourne, in the Colony of Victoria, on board the Persian with their eight children, arriving on the 9th of April 1854.
Patrick wed Mary Ellen Hickey at Victoria in 1861.[1]
They had six children.
Patrick began the Perkins Brewery in Toowoomba, with his brother Thomas in 1867. They later purchased the City Brewery in Brisbane in 1872. Thomas Perkins was accidentally killed in 1876 and buried in Toowoomba. Among their brands were XXX Ale and XXX Stout, later XXXX.[2][3][4]
The Perkins Breweries prospered until the 1920's when they were sold to Castlemaine Brewery.
Patrick was first elected to the seat of Aubigny in 1877 as a member of the Legislative Assembly.
In 1883, Patrick purchased a two story, Palatial "Queenslander" style home at North Quay in Brisbane, built in 1870, and named it Aubigny.
Transcript
The house itself is of plaster-faced brick, with a corrugated iron roof. Iti s two-storied, with a basement, and the principal part of it contains chiefly four main rooms, on all three floors, with veranda and balcony all round. There is also a wing to the left, of one story, and a basement, All the old walls are plastered, and the fittings are of cedar, also one of the mantel-pieces, which is carved. This fireplace is an open one, deep, and tiled in green and yellow. The rest of the mantelpieces, both upstairs and down, are of marble, and a hall runs right through the building on all three floors. In use is a one-storied brick house to the left of the garden. This was purchased by Mr. Perkins a little time after his buying of the two-storied home, and used as quarters for his sons and any of their young friends when staying there. A lattice fence separates the garden of this house from that of the larger one, and on the right-hand side of the latter is a considerable portion of ground, containing some beautiful shade trees, Soon this old historic home will be no more, but perhaps the historic little brick building will be preserved and put to yet another use.[5]
The Honourable Patrick Perkins passed away in 1901, after a short illness,[6] and buried in the Boroondara Cemetery, Melbourne, Victoria.
