Biography

Lurissa was born in 1821. She passed away in 1889.

Taken from [1]:

"Lurissa was the fourth child of Big John & Phebe Caroline (Taylor) Patton. She was born in Wayne Twp on the Patton homestead, which was just south of the Caskey homestead. Lurissa married on 26 Dec 1838, to Alexander Caskey. They were married in the front room of the old brick house, which belonged to Lurissa's parents. Rev. Robert Stewart, Lurissa's brother-in-law & Pastor of the Cherry Fork Presbyterian church performed the ceremony. Alex & Lurissa's attendants were members of their family. Rev. Robert Stewart, came home with Alex, the day after the wedding to the "Infamous Turkey Dinner" in Alex's father & mother's home. Alex and Lurissa lived with his parents, James (Jim) & Margaret (Peggy) Caskey. Lurrissa died of heart disease & her obituary provides the following information: Lurissa retired to bed about 8 PM & she was awakened in about 2 hours by a terrible pain in the region of her heart. She suffered very greatly for about half an hour when death came to her relief. She is gone. As a friend, neighbor, a citizen, a church member & a philanthropist she will be missed. No word of mine can add to her fame. The large concourse of persons at her funeral attest the esteem in which she was held. The funeral services were conducted at the U.P. Church at North Liberty where the deceased had been a valued member since her early youth. The services were conducted by Rev. John Knox Montgomery (Lurissa's niece's husband, later he became President of Muskingum College), assisted by Rev. Anderson & were very impressive. After the services were over the remains were laid to rest in the new cemetery south of the church to sleep till the resurrection morn. Mrs. Caskey is no more with us in the flesh, but the memory of her will live long among those who survive her. That she had the infirmities of human nature we do not deny, but in this world of sin & in this incessant conflict with error, how few have passed so pure a life or breathed so modest & so gentle a spirit. Our prayer to God is, that memories may have a chastening, a purifying & an elevating influence upon us & fit us to discharge better than we have ever yet done, our duties of earth & heaven. (The rest of the obit is missing)

Alex & Lurissa raised 2 of her sister, Martha (Patton) Stewart's children, Phebe Ann Stewart & Mary Stewart, due to the untimely death of both of their parents.

Alex & Lurissa had 8 children: Margaret Caskey, B 12 Dec 1841, D 4 Oct 1849; Phebe Ann Caskey, B 11 Nov 1843, D 26 May 1848; Charles "Will" William Caskey, B 30 May 1845, M Mary Emily Kirk, moved to Kansas; Isbella Caskey, B 19 Dec 1846, M Marion Francis Crissman, Died in childbirth; John Patton Caskey, B 1 Jan 1849, M Sarah Albertine Patton, second Alma L.
