Francis Arthur Macarthur-Onslow was an Australian grazier, business owner and director and army officer during the Second Boer War. He was afterward elected to office in local government.

Arthur (Onslow) Macarthur-Onslow was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)

Francis Arthur Onslow was born on 7th June 1879 in Camden, New South Wales (Australia). Arthur, as he was known, was the fifth and youngest surviving son of Arthur Onslow and Elizabeth McArthur. ^[1] His elder siblings included George Macarthur-Onslow and James Macarthur-Onslow. His father died when Arthur still in early childhood, and his mother took him and his siblings to Europe in 1887 to be educated. When his mother changed her name to Macarthur-Onslow in 1892, 13 year-old Francis Arthur also took the name, Macarthur-Onslow.

Arthur attended Rugby School and Exeter College, Oxford.

New South Wales Mounted Rifles

Having returned home to Australia, Macarthur-Onslow was commissioned into the New South Wales Mounted Rifles on 29th April 1897. He was promoted to Lieutenant in July 1899, and served in the Second Boer War from 1900 to 1901 with the 7th Dragoon Guards. Arthur saw fighting at Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, and Bergenda, before contracting rheumatic fever and being invalided home,

Arthur married Sylvia Chisholm in 1903 in Goulburn, New South Wales. ^[2] They had four children:

• Major General Sir Denzil Macarthur-Onslow (1904-84)
• Margaret Elizabeth (1905-84), married Michael King in 1930, married John Sydney Davenport in 1960
• Lieutenant Colonel Edward Macarthur-Onslow (1909-80)
• Flight Lieutenant Andrew William Macarthur-Onslow (1918-43), killed in a flying accident at Quirindi near Tamworth

In 1916, Arthur began raising sheep at Macquarie Grove, and also became a director of Camden Park Estate Pty Ltd, Camden Vale Milk Co. and the Dairy Farmers' Co-operative Milk Co., the companies set up by his mother to administer the Camden Park estate. After some time managing Camden Park, he retired to Camden and began a real-estate business. He was Mayor of Camden on three occasions. He also enjoyed horse racing, owning his own track and stud, and was a member of the Australian Jockey Club.

Arthur passed away suddenly of a severe heart attack on 3rd March 1938 in Sydney, New South Wales. He was just 58 years of age. ^[3][4][5]
