Catherine Murphy was born before 1848. She was a daughter of Daniel Murphy and Mary Cullen.
She married James Nash on 6th July 1868 at Maryborough, Queensland. [1] Just the year before, James had discovered gold up the Mary River at Gympie. The couple had three sons and two daughters; a son and a daughter passing away in early childhood and the other daughter in her teens.
Unwise investments in mining stock and an ill-fated drapery store dried up James' earnings on his gold fields, however, in 1888, the Queensland government graciously made him Gympie's powder-magazine keeper.
After James died in 1913 the government paid Catherine an annual pension of £50 ($100). In June 1915 her younger surviving son was killed in action at Gallipoli.
Catherine passed away on 9th May 1931 at Queensland. [2] She was survived by one son and two grandsons.
