Biography

Sarah Miller was born on 25 Sep 1872 at 8 Holt Street, Peel Ditch, Ince in Makerfield, Lancashire. She was the daughter of Benjamin Miller and Sarah Miller. She was christened on 27 Oct 1872 at Christ Church in Ince. Her family's address was given as Caroline Street, and her father's occupation as collier.

By April 3rd 1881, Sarah's family were living in Holt Street, off Manchester Road in Ince. She had two older brothers Richard (16) and Levi (14), and an older sister Mary Jane (11). Sarah herself was nine. She had a younger brother Simon (5) and a younger sister Mary Ann (2). Their father, a Yorkshireman, was employed as a coal miner; Richard and Levi were coal mine labourers.

By April 5th 1891, they had moved to Leader Street, Wigan. Sarah's father was still a coal miner. Only four of the children remained at home - Levi (24) was a coal miner, Sarah (18) a cotton weaver, Simon (15) a coal miner's drawer, and Benjamin (8) was still in school.

Sarah married Salisbury Hope on 27 Sep 1899 at St Bartholomew's Church in Westhoughton. Salisbury was 21 and a bricklayer; Sarah was 26. Neither had been married before. Salisbury was living at 5 Andrew's Terrace; Sarah's address was 26 Peel Street. Their fathers were named as Thomas Hope (bricklayer) and Benjamin Miller (collier). The witnesses were Simon Miller and Margaret Boydell.

By March 31st 1901, Salisbury and Sarah were living at 103 Dicconson Lane, Westhoughton. Salisbury was employed as a bricklayer, and they had one child, Elizabeth, aged one.

By April 2nd 1911, they were still in Westhoughton. Salisbury was working as an estate agent.

Salisbury died on 17 Mar 1913, aged 34, at 7 Peel Terrace, Westhoughton. He was buried on 20 Mar 1913 at St Bartholomew's Churchyard in Westhoughton.
