Charles Stephen Meacham was born in 1861, in Lichfield, Staffordshire, England, son of Thomas Meacham and Mary (Ward) Meacham.
The Meacham family had been in Lichfield for many generations, but Mary Ward was born is West Tisted, near Southampton, in Hampshire. She was orphaned by the age of 7, almost certainly spent some time in the poor house, and was a servant by the age of 12.
By the age of 20 Charles was working at the Lichfield Brewery, where his uncle (his Aunt Emma Meacham's husband George Haynes) was a "brewer's agent and traveller", and George's father, Sam Haynes, was a director. Charles was trained as a brewer, and as a brewery chemist. He was elected fellow of the Chemical Society in 1892 [1]
Charles's first love was oil painting, especially landscapes, but he pursued his career as a brewer to have a reliable income in order to marry Florence Peploe Wood, which he did in 1885. He continued to paint for the rest of his life, and many of his paintings can be found on the Internet.
Around the same time, he took a position of brewery chemist at Fremlin's Brewery in Maidstone, Kent. He published a number of technical papers on the chemistry of hops, and other aspects of brewing. All 4 of his children were born in Maidstone.
His next position was at Olsson's Brewery in Cape Town, South Africa, where the whole family moved. They lived in a house called Mariendahl House, on the brewery propery[2] When they arrived in Cape Town, the guerrilla war phase of the Boer War was still raging. His daughters remembered rolling bandages as their support for the war effort. There are two pictures of him in an online forum [3] as a captain in the No. 4 (Suburban) Battalion, Cape Peninsula Regiment.
They made frequent trips (by sea) back to Europe, including painting holidays in Italy, and holidays in a house Charles built in Scaur Top, Kippford, Scotland (near Dalbeattie).
Charles and Florence retired, first to a houe called Hildacot on London Road in Hildenborough, Surrey, in the 1920s[4], and then to a house called Hildacot in Godstone Green, Surrey in the 1930s. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1935.
Charles died in 1940, shortly after the start of World War II.
