His son, Isaac, was born in 1642 in Salem, Mass. Apparently, he married Margaret in 1640 in Massachusetts. So Jeremiah arrived before then.

Biography

Note; Some sources indicate that Jeremiah Meacham came to Salem, but was later of Long Island, NY, returning to Salem abt 1666.

The first official record of the Meacham family in America occurs in 1650 at which time Jeremiah Meacham was living at Southhold, Long Island. In 1653 he settled at East Hampton, Long Island, "to do the town's weaving." Jeremiah Meacham returned to Salem in 1666. His first wife's name was Margaret; to this union were born at least seven children. Margaret died in 1679 at Salem. Jeremiah then married a widow, Alice Douch (Dane). Her father was Osman Douch, and her first husband was Dr. John Dane. She died in May 1704 in Salem, Mass. Jeremiah died November 11, 1696 in Salem. [1]

Jeremiah Meacham, immigrant ancestor of all the colonial families of this surname, settled in Salem, Massachusetts before 1650, when the records show that he sold a house and land there. He was a clothier or fuller by trade. He married Alice, daughter of Osman and Grace Dutch, who sold property at Bridport, England July 18, 1639.

Jeremiah Meacham died in 1695. In his will dated April 12, 1694 and proved November 18, 1695, he is described as very antient. He mentions his first wife Margaret, and his present wife Alice; daughter Rhoda, deceased, and her son Samuel West; left his fulling mill to his son Jeremiah. The estate was divided by agreement June 26, 1696, the heirs being: Jeremiah and Isaac Meacham; Sarah, wife of Joseph Boyce; Rebecca wife of John McCarter; Bethiah wife of George Hackler: and Hannah Gill, widow. [4] Proved 18 Nov. 1695. [5]

Origins Need Research: Millenium File gives his birth as 6 Mar 1614, Bristol, Somerset, England. As this is an unreliable source and Jeremiah Meacham isn't in the Great Migration Directory, the claimed origins/parents here should be investigated.

Date of Death: An exact date of death of 11 November 1695 is found in many places. I couldn't find an original record to support this date, or a record providing an age at death, although both appear in NYGBR articles first in 1934[8] and then repeated in a correction article in 1938.[1] Jacobus does not reference the date in The Granberry Family and Allied Families.[9] Cole-12288 22:10, 28 April 2024 (UTC)

I added some notes on the specific date of death. It appears in a couple of NYGBR articles (including an article by Mary Lovering Holman), but I couldn't find an original record. Jacobus doesn't use the date in The Granberry Family. Not sure if we should keep the 11 November date, or change it to before 18 November, when the will was proven.

Can anyone provide a source for the baptism 6 Mar 1614 in Crewkerne, Somerset, England to Ambrose Meacham. There are baptisms for children before and after, but I'm not finding a Jeremiah in that date range.
