Biography

Sage was born in 1988, as Dorothy Christa-Jean Martin. They are the AFAB child of Thomas Martin and Bee Bradley.

Thomas and Bee divorced in 1990, with Thomas being granted custody. From there, Thomas and Sage moved to Illinois to live with Thomas's brother, John Martin, and sister-in-law, Wendom Palmer. Thomas died as a result of a car accident on August 19, 1990, in Illinois, leaving Sage in the care of his brother and sister-in-law.

Sage was then adopted on March 12, 1993, by John and Wendom, who changed Sage's legal name to Dorothy Elizabeth Martin. They remained in Illinois until May 1999, before spending one year in Eagle, Colorado, after which they moved to Grand Bay, Alabama in June 2000. It was around this time that Sage started using the name "Liz" instead of her given first name.

Sage remained in Alabama, between Grand Bay and Loxley, until December 2009 when they moved to Luttrell, TN for one year, with their child, Andy Martin, born July 22, 2008. In January 2011, they moved to Knoxville, where they lived until December 2014.

During this time, they married their husband, Brad O'Neal on April 14, 2011.

Their father died by suicide on January 16, 2012, after struggling with depression and health issues for many years. On March 17, 2012, just two months later, Sage gave birth to their second child, Breña O'Neal.

Sage separated from their husband on November 21, 2014, and moved to Oak Ridge, TN in January 2015. From August 2016 to May 2018, they attended Pellissippi State Community College and obtained an Associate's Degree in Social Work. Upon completion of this degree, they went on to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, beginning in August 2018 until May 2021.

While finishing their undergraduate degree, Sage purchased a home in Maryville, TN in July of 2020. Sage completed their Bachelor's in Social Work with Honors and went on to obtain a Master's in Social Work with a certificate in Veterinary Social Work, graduating in May 2022.

In September 2023, Sage dropped their legal name almost entirely, still going by Liz in most circles, but preferring Sage as a gender-neutral alternative. In October 2023, they hope to file for a full legal name change to adopt their mom's last name, Palmer, and take the name "Liz Sage Palmer" as their legal name.

Sage currently works in crisis services and has a passion for advocacy, equality, and social justice initiatives.

Hi Liz,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles!

It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines laid out on that page.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Is there a way to attach adoptive/step-parents? Or is WikiTree working purely on a marital/bloodline ties type of tree?

Hi Liz,

You mentioned adoption. By adding your branches to our shared tree, there may be an opportunity for someone to find you!

Adoptees: How to Set Up Your Profile is a WikiTree help page specifically designed for new members who indicate they are adoptees. It is also helpful for non-adopted members who have living adoptees in their family tree. The page includes links to more resources, like our Adoption Angels Project, basic search techniques, information on DNA, etc.
