Biography

James was born about 1829 in Street, County Westmeath, Ireland.

At the age of 26 he married Anne Eginton in County Westmeath, Ireland and they had five children. Anne died in 1869, leaving James with five young children.

Some years later, James and his (mostly adult) children migrated to the colony of Victoria, Australia (sometime in the 1880s, probably around 1886, although his eldest son John seems to have arrived some years earlier - see notes below). They lived in Brunswick and James worked as a labourer (1892) and as a gardener (1895). [1]

James passed away in 1905, in Brunswick at the age of 76. The cause of death was listed as heart failure, old age. He was buried at Coburg Pine Ridge Cemetery on the 5th of October 1905.

Notes

Time of Maloney family arrival in Australia? It seems the family did not all come together. According to James's death certificate, he had been 19 years in Victoria (in 1905) which would make his arrival around 1886. The obituary of John Maloney in 1931 says he had been in Brunswick for over 50 years, which would put his arrival back to 1881 or earlier. The information in the obituary seems to have come from John's brother James. John's first daughter Anne was born in Victoria in 1882, so he may have been the first to come. However as James Jnr married Sophia in Dublin in 1885, he appears to have arrived some years after his brother John.
