Fergal mac Máele Dúin was a King of Ailech, ruling 700-722[1]
Fergal was a HIgh King of Ireland. He became king of Ireland about 710. Recorded as Fergall, he is listed as no: 156 in John O'Harts Roll of the Monarchs of Ireland. [2]
He was killed in the Battle of Allen (Co. Kildaire), leading 21,000 men against the Leinstermen.[3] The battle was preserved in the 10th century saga Cath Almaine. Fergal was succeeded as High King of Ireland by Fogartach mac Néill of the Síl nÁedo Sláine sept of the southern Uí Néill clan. His oldest son Áed Allán succeeded him as King of Ailech and chief of the Cenél nEógain. Both his sons: Áed Allán and Niall Frossach, were both later High Kings of Ireland. [4]
