Niall Caille mac Aedh was born in Ireland.

Progenitor of the Clann Néill[1]

Niall Mac Áeda, a son of Áed mac Néill, was one of the Cenél nEógain, a branch of the Uí Néill of north-western Ireland [2] Sometimes known as Nial Caille Mac Aedo Oirdnide O'Neil; Niall mac Áeda was called Niall Caille, Niall of the River Caillen or Callan, to distinguish him from his grandson Niall Mac Aedo

Niall deposed his cousin Murchad in 823 and became King of the North.

He routed the Norse invaders who landed at Lough Foyle in 823

In 827 he defeated the men of Oriel who had opposed the election in of his personal confessor as Archbishop of Armagh.

After the death of Conchobar mac Donnchada in 833, Niall became High King of Ireland [3]

He defeated the Danes in 835

He defeated Feidhlimidh, King of Munster in 840

He defeated the Danes in 843. In 845, he defeated the Vikings at Mag Itha, Dublin [4]

He defeated the Danes again in 846, but during the pursuit of the retreating Danes, was drowned in the flooded River Callain (the Calann River, County Armagh) while trying to rescue one of his men who had been swept from his horse. He was buried at Clonard Abbey in county Meath. [5] [6]

Niall married Gormflaith ingen Donncadha, daughter of Dunchad Mac Domhnaill and a sister of Conchobar mac Donnchada.

Mac Aedh-1 and Aedh-1 appear to represent the same person because: These seem to be duplicates (there was no brother named Duin or Mael Duin, so probably names and dates just are wrong (mistake)...or these are no brothers and Mael Duin is no son from these parents . Here's a Mael Duin a tale of a sea voyage written in Old Irish around the end of the first millennium. He is the son of Ailill Edge-of-Battle, whose murder provides the initial impetus for the tale. (a Tale !)
