Alain LeRoy Locke was an American writer, philosopher, educator, and a patron of the arts. He was the first African-American Rhodes Scholar in 1907. He was the "Dean" of the Harlem Renaissance.[1]

He was born to Pliny Ishmael Locke and Mary Hawkins.[2]

He listed his birth date as 13 September 1886 and his birth place as Philedelphia. [3]

He was chair of Howard University's Department of Philosophy—a position that he would hold until his retirement in 1953.

Baha'i Faith

Alain Locke joined the Baha'i Faith in 1918, in Washington D.C. [5]

Alain went on pilgrimage to the Baha'i Holy places in Haifa, Israel at some point between 1922 and 1924. He met Shoghi Effendi and conversed with him during his pilgrimage. At one point they walked through the gardens being developed around the Shrine of the Bab and 'Abdu'l-Baha. His description can be found Star of the West [6] and Through the Pilgrim's Eye. [7]

Alain participated in the first Race Amity Conference, arranged by Agnes Parsons at the behest of 'Abdu'l-Baha. At the time he was a professor at Howard University. The conference took place in Washington D.C. in 1921. It was followed by several Race Amity Conferences throughout the country.[8]

Alain wrote many articles concerning faith and racial harmony. Many are found in "World Order" a Baha'i published magazine, and other publications. It is hoped that in the future, some of these will be listed.

He died in New York and was buried in the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, District of Columbia.
