My Story
Many of my ancestors immigrated from Bohemia and a few from Poland. They settled primarily in Iowa and Illinois. My great grandfather was born near Pisek, Bohemia and maternal grandmother was from Zakopane, Galicia (now Poland). My interest in family history was inherited from my mother. She kept all the family photos and was the most active in keeping track of family members. She did not have the benefit of the tools we have to research with today but fortunately she did not throw much away. She even still had the receipt from the hospital where I was born in in 1952. (Maybe the hospital had a return policy – kidding). My parents moved from Chicago to a farm near Bemidji, Minnesota shortly after I was born. Since that time, my immediate family and many close relatives that have also relocated here and they also get to enjoy the Minnesota winters and State Bird (mosquitoes). I developed an interest in music around 6th grade. Many members of my family played the accordion. Upon hearing me play a party one of my college professors commented that “all bohemians/poles are born with an accordion in their lap”. When I entered high school, I had to trade in my accordion for a cello and in college graduated with a BA in Music performance. While working on a master’s degree in chemistry in Duluth, Minnesota I also played in the Duluth Superior Symphony for 7 seasons. After leaving Duluth I spent 8 years working at Sigma Chemical and then moved to Minneapolis where I worked at R&D Systems (Biotechne) until I retired.
