Biography

From Biographical Sketches of Grant County:

DR. FRANK LENNOX is a native of Marion, Grant Co., Ind., was born September 23, 1849, is the youngest son of H. J. and Mary (Hall) Lennox, both natives of Ohio. Our subject attended the Marion schools, from which he received a good education. In 1864, at the early age of fourteen, he entered the Northern army, where he served his country until the close of the war. - In 1867 he Entered Wabash College, where he remained two years. Returning to Marion he read medicine three years with Drs. William and Constantine Lomax. He then continued his studies at the Indiana Medical College, from which he graduated in 1872. His professional labors were begun at New Corydon, Jay Co., Ind., where he remained until the spring of 1876. In June of the same year he returned to Grant County, practicing his profession at Point Isabel until the fall of 1882, when he located at Swayzee, in which place he at present resides. As a practitioner he is very successful, having built up a good practice at each place he has been. Virginia, daughter of James and Elizabeth (Clark) Lafferty, became his wife June 17, 1877, and to them have been born two children: Edwin, born April 4, 1878, and Edna, born July 17, 1881. Mrs. Lennox's father was a native of New Jersey, and her mother and herself natives of Pennsylvania. Mr. Lennox has a membership in the Christian Church, I. O. O. F., I. O. R. M., and has passed the chairs in Odd Fellowship. He is also a member of the G. A. R., and is at present Commander of Edwin Lennox Post, No. 408, named for his brother, who was killed in the late Rebellion. The Doctor is a Republican.

From the Marion Daily Chronicle January 15, 1892:

A STROKE OF APOPLEXY prostrates Dr. Frank Lennox – he will probably not recover.

At Xenia today Dr. Frank Lennox was taken with an apoplectic stroke and will probably not live until morning. The information is meagre. The doctor had gone to Xenia to examine a pension applicant. A telephone message was received at 2 o'clock this afternoon asking that the doctor’s brother, his wife and Corda Tibbits come at once, and these left on the afternoon train.

Dr. Lennox is one of the most popular physicians in Marion. For years he held a lucrative country practice at Swayzee, until he moved here less than two years ago. He is a partner of Dr. Barnes, with offices in the Willson block.

From the Marion Daily Chronicle January 15, 1892:

DR. FRANK LENNOX DEAD – An Ideal Doctor and Popular – Passed away at nine O’Clock last night – Belonged to many societies. Dr. Frank Lennox died last night. He was attended by Drs. T.C. Kimball and W.C. Barnes. Every possible mdeical alternative was resorted to but nothing availed and unconscious all the while the last breath flitted away at 9 o’clock. The remains will be interred at the Odd Fellows’ cemetery tomorrow afternoon.

Though very corpulent Dr. Lennox had been enjoying good health and no thought that he should die from apoplexy probably entered his mind. He was driving to Xenia to examine a pension applicant. The night beforehe had given the reporter the item. His hostler, Jim Havens, was in the buggy with him. Shortly after they had passed Mier the doctor first received the stroke and became unconscious. Havens thought it was only a temporary sickness and drove on to Xenia.

The Doctor’s Life

Dr. Frank Lennox was born September 20, 1849 at the brick house on Boots Street which is still standing. He commenced his study of medicine with Dr. William Lomax and finished his education at the Indiana Medical College. When the war broke out he enlisted in the 153rd Indiana and saw months of service. He was wedded to Miss Jenne Lafferty and to them were born a son and a daughter, Edwin and Edna. It was the death of the latter last spring that almost broke the mother’s heart, and now she is prostrated by the loss of her husband.

Few men in the country have been as popular as Dr. Lennox. Marion was his boyhood home and here and in the adjoining villages he has been engaged in the practice of medicine for nearly a score of years. Good natured and a jovial companion, his has been an honest and liberal minded course. He was a typical country doctor, enjoying to an eminent degree the confidence of his patients, ready to go any hour or anywhere, and bringing sunlight to many a sick room. He practiced medicine at Pt. Isabel, in Illinois, at Swayzee and finally with Dr. W.C. Barnes in Marion, having moved here from Swayzee less than two years ago. He was a happy frater in the secret societies and was welcomed and honored in many organizations. A Past Grand Odd Fellow, a Chief in the Order of Red Men, a Page in the K. of P., he was an active member of the GAR, the Order of the Elks, and Patriotic Order, Sons of America.
