Service started: 25 Jul 1890
Unit(s): 4th Marine Brigade; US Army 2nd Division

Lt. Gen. John Archer Lejeune was a United States Marine and the 13th Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps.[1][2] A "Marine's Marine," he is considered by many to be one of the greatest Marines to have ever served, the "greatest of all Leathernecks."[2] Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, was named in his honor during World War II.[1]

Family

John Archer Lejeune was born January 10, 1867 on a plantation in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana.[3][2][4] He was the son of Confederate Army Captain Ovide Lejeune and Laura Archer Turpin.[5][1][4] John grew up in Pointe Coupee.[6]

John attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, graduating with a Bachelors of Arts, before moving on to enter the U.S. Naval Academy.[1][2][4] He served as a midshipman, graduating from the Academy in 1888.[1][2] He then went on to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps, being commissioned as a second lieutenant 25 July 1890.[1]

While in Norfolk, Virginia, for Marine duty, John met Ellie Harrison Murdaugh, in 1890.[1] They were wed 23 October 1895 in Portsmouth, Norfolk, Virginia.[5]

Children of the marriage:
  1. Ellie Murdaugh Lejeune (1896-1942)[7]
  2. Laura Turpin Lejeune (c.1903-1998)[8]
  3. Eugenie Dickson Lejeune (1904-1971)[9]

John's family sometimes accompanied him on his duty trips. They were with him when he was sent to the Philippines.[1] John and Ellie otherwise raised their family in Washington D.C.[10] and Virginia, where they were married.[11][12][13]

Lejeune had nearly 40 years service in the Marine Corps including commanding the Marine Guard of the USS Cincinnati (C-7) during the Spanish-American War and the U.S. Army's 2nd Division during World War I, being second of two times in U.S. military history when Marine Corps officers commanded an Army division.[1][3][2] Lejeune wasn't really ready to retire, but was relieved of duty as commandant in March 1929.[1] His service with the Marine Corps after he retired was as the 5th Superintendent of the Virginia Military Institute.[1]

John was bestowed with the Commander of the Order of the Legion of Honor and Croix de guere with Bronze Palm honors by the French Government for his service in World War I.[1] He also was awarded the United States Army's Distinguished Service Medal and the United States Navy's Distinguished Service Medal.

The United States Marine Corps League, credits its founding to John Archer Lejeune.[1] It is the only Congressionally-chartered Marine Corps veterans organization.[1]

Legacy

John Archer Lejeune died November 20, 1942 in Baltimore, Maryland.[2] He was interred in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, with full honors.[2][14]

Camp Lejeune in North Carolina was named in John's honor during World War II.[1] He was also honored on a postage stamp in 2005.[2] There are several statues of Lejeune erected across the country. He is also memorialized in building names and on USS Lejeune (AP-74), a Navy transport ship.[1]

Hi Jim,

It is policy that only Project Box templates be above the biography line. I know that a lot of profiles do not meet this standard at this time, but will be changed to conform soon. Would you mind moving the succession box back under his military service discussion section? That is where it makes sense since his service is then discussed there. Thanks!
