Biography

Ivone is the first of the family whose name can be traced in known documents. His name occurs in a Charter of Robert Brus the elder and Eugemia his wife.[1][2][3] The Kirkpatrick family were friends of supporters of the De Brus family and had most likly accompanied them from Yorkshire when the Bruces settled in Annandale.[4]

Name

The name Ivo stood alone originally, but later the name of his lands, Kirkpatrick, were incorporated as a surname.[5] The charters that help identify this process are undated but one is from Robert (Brus) de Brus IInd of Annandale (abt.1120-abt.1189) and therefore before 1189 where no surname is used and another from his son William (Brus) de Brus (abt.1145-abt.1212) therefore before 1212 with the surname in evidence.

Family

The name(s) of his wife/wives is unknown. He had had at least one child:

  1. William[6]

In a charter from WIlliam de Brus, one of the witnesses was a Roger Kirkpatrick,[7] leading one speculate whether he was a brother or son.
