Ian Kiernan AO was born in New South Wales, Australia

"Ian Bruce Carrick Kiernan was born on Oct. 4, 1940, to George and Leslie Kiernan and grew up in Sydney. He attended Scots College and the Armidale School in New South Wales."[1]

Ian was a yachtsman and racing sailor. After sailing around the world, he became keenly aware of ocean pollution and started the organization Clean Up Australia with a group of friends in 1990. They came "[t]ogether to organize volunteers to clean up Sydney Harbor." "In 1993, the movement expanded globally as Clean Up the World, and today it engages millions of volunteers in more than 100 countries."[1]

He was made an Officer of the Order of Australia on 26 January 1995. The citation read:

For service to conservation and the environment through the Clean-Up Australia and Clean-Up the World campaigns.

Ian died on Wednesday, 16 Oct 2018 in Australia. He lived in Kirribilli at the time of his death. He was survived by his wife and three children.[1] His obituary in the Sydney Daily Telegraph reads:

Ian Kiernan died peacefully at home after a short and brave battle with cancer. He was the treasured husband of Judy, adored father of Sal, Pip and Jack, much loved brother of Ann and wickedly funny grandfather of Saskia, Madeleine, Milly, Louis, Tom and Neve. One of Australia's pioneering environmentalists, Ian gave selflessly to this beautiful country and its people. His purpose was to empower everyday Aussies to get together to clean up. A truly great Australian, Ian's leadership inspired us all. He is in our hearts forever. ... Private Cremation. A State Memorial Service will be announced at a later date.
