Biography

Solomon Keneipp was born April 30, 1797 in Northampton, Hampshire County Massachusetts, the youngest child of Christian and Meribah Miller Keneipp. Solomon was baptized June 13, 1797 and spent his early childhood in Massachusetts and then moved with his family to Geauga County Ohio in 1806.

There he met and married Nancy Ruark, about 1816, the daughter of John and Mary Ruark. The Ruark family moved to Edwards County Illinois in 1816 and a year later Solomon, Nancy and their son James, moved as well arriving in December 1817. In addition to James, the couple had seven other children, Fanny (Ruby), Mary Melinda (Pickering), John Miller, Rebecca, Jacob, Nancy Jane and Solomon Benjamin Franklin.

Solomon’s father Christian later joined them and purchased ground in the Ruark area. After his father died, Solomon purchased 40 acres, (Sec 23 T3R13) in 1837 and then an additional 40 acres (NE ¼ NW1/4, Sec 26, T2R13) in 1838. Solomon and Nancy built their home on this last parcel of land. Solomon died January 10, 1850 and was buried at Ruark Cemetery, now known as Moffett Cemetery located in Lukin Township, Lawrence County, Illinois.

He was an early settler in Illinois earning a Prairie Pioneer Certificate (#2708) for settling in Lawrence in 1820. [1] He died in 1850 at the age of 52.

Spouse: Nancy Hannah (Ruark) Keneipp 1796 - 1872. They were married 6/18/1816 in Jefferson, Clark, Indiana. Per Indiana Marriages, 1780 - 1992. Findagrave #106652096
