Biography

Jonathan was christened in 1816 but appears to have been born around 1811.^[1]

In the 1841 Census, he is still in Northaw but recorded as being at ‘Village’. He is the head a family and age thirty-five (so probably born around 1811). His occupation is ‘shoe maker’. It seems likely that he may have learned this trade from his father. His family includes his wife Mary, age thirty-five (so born about 1806), not born in Hertfordshire, and their seven children:

1. Sarah, age eleven (born 1830)
2. James, ten (born 1831)
3. William, eight (born 1833)
4. John, six (born 1835)
5. Maria, five (born 1836)
6. Charles, three (born 1838); and,
7. George, one (born 1840).
