Handy Jones is a part of US Black heritage.

Handy was born in 1847.

Handy's daughter Martha Organ was interviewed May 18, 1937 in Cary, North Carolina about her life and her time as an enslaved person.

"I doan know nothin' 'bout slavery 'cept what I hyard my mother tell, an' dat ain't so much. I know dat my pappy's name wuz Handy Jones an' my mammy's name wuz Melisa. She belong to a Mr. Whitaker but atter she married my pappa she belonged ter Mr. Rufus Jones, Mr. Rufus wuz Mr. Wesley Jones' brother at de ole Fanning Jones place; an' he owned a sizable plantation."


Interview: Martha Organ was interviewed in Cary, North Carolina by Mary A. Hicks as part of the Federal Writer's Project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The results are made available by the Library of Congress. [1]

Handy married Harriett ___ about 1897 and had more children. See the 1900 census enumeration cited below.
