Biography
Elizabeth (Johnson) Davis (Abt.1829-1894) was the second wife of Rutherford County, Tennessee farmer Abel Davis, Jr. and the mother of seven of his children.
Elizabeth was born in Rutherford County about 1829 (based on the 1850 census), the daughter of John Johnson and his first wife Jane (Miller) Johnson. Her mother died in 1838 when Elizabeth was approximately nine years old, and Elizabeth as a minor received a 77-acre parcel of land as part of her mother's estate settlement.[1] Her father remarried in 1838 to Sarah Adcock.
Elizabeth appeared in the 1850 census as age 21, living in the home of her father and stepmother.

On 30 August 1855 in Rutherford County, Elizabeth married widower Abel Davis, Jr.[3]. She became a stepmother to his eight children, and by him, she would become the mother of seven more children:

Abel died intestate in 1869. Per Tennessee law at that time, Elizabeth received a homestead and one-third of the estate. Abel's death left her with a large family of children to raise and a farm to maintain. She did not remarry. She raised her children on the farm, which was in District 14 of Rutherford County near Christiana.

Elizabeth died intestate in May 1894, and Charles R. Holmes was appointed administrator of her estate. Her burial place is unknown.
Notes
Elizabeth appears in the 1870 census as "Isabell Davis", but no other records refer to her as Isabell. It may be that this was just a mishearing of the word "Elizabeth" by the census taker.
