Hazel (Johnson) Payne is a part of US Black heritage.
Hazel Johnson was born on 30 Jan 1935[1] in Virginia. She was the daughter of Herman and Sarah Johnson.[2][3] In 1940 and 1950, she lived in Namozine, Dinwiddie County, Virginia with her family.[2][4] She graduated from Southside High School in 1953 and went to Virginia State College for 2.5 years.[3]
Hazel married Donald Milford Payne Sr. in 1958 [5]and they had two children. They lived in Newark, New Jersey and Hazel was a member of Newark's Pilgrim Baptist Church.[3] Both her husband and her son Donald Payne Jr. would later become US Congressman representing New Jersey.[5]
Hazel died on 26 Jul 1963 in the Clara Maass Hospital in Belleville, New Jersey.[3] She was buried in Glendale Cemetery in Bloomfield, Essex County, New Jersey.[1]
