Derek left the UK at 13 [2] headed for New Zealand under the ‘Big Brother’ scheme after spotting an advert in the Evening Mail. This scheme sent children to foster homes in New Zealand and Australia. He spent his time working on farms before he joined the new Zealand Prison Service and eventually became a prison governor.
He passed away in 2014.
