Gilbert Johnson died in a coal mine explosion on 27 Aug 1940

When Gilbert C Johnson was born on October 8, 1907, in Jenny Lind, Sebastian, Arkansas[1], his father, Harry Mayo Johnson[1], was 25 and his mother, Frances Martha (Clark) Johnson[1], was 22. He married Rose Spencer on July 9, 1927 in Jenny Lind, Sebastian, Arkansas.[2] After his first wifes death he married Lillian McCray on May 2, 1940, in Sebastian County, Arkansas.[3] He died on August 27, 1940, in Bates, Scott, Arkansas[4], at the age of 33, and was buried in Jenny Lind, Sebastian, Arkansas.[5]

Early Life

Gilbert was born the third son of 9 children (4 brothers and 3 sisters). He was born into a family of coal miners, his father worked the coal mines along with his brothers.

Family Life

He married his first wife, Rose Spencer[2] at age 20 and started worki Hng in the coal mines to support his family. They did not have any children and in 1937 at the age of 27 she contracted influenza and pneumonia. Three years later he married his second white Lillian McCray[3], but he would die the same year in a mining accident.

Death/Legacy

Gilbert C Johnson died in a mining accident on August 27, 1940 in Bates, Scott, Arkansas at the age of 33. An explosion occurred 1,700 feet beneath the surface at night, trapped and kill 10 miners, including Gilbert. The night watchman was just coming on duty when he heard the blast and sounded the alarm. Rescue crews were able to rescue the injured and recover the bodies of those that died in the explosion. The Bates No. 2 mine was owned by the Bates Coal Corporation and was the second deadly explosion (first 1936 killing 4 men) to occur in recent years. [6] His brother Mayo was working in the same mine and was also killed.

Research Notes

Gilbert death certificate list his birth year 1905, but on the census and his tombstone it is listed as 1907. His sister Freda who was born about 2 years before him was born in 1905 so I'm assuming the death record has his birth year wrong. Jim Honey
