Edwin was born[1]on 18 April 1847 and was registered[2][3][4]during the second quarter of 1847 in the district of Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales, United Kingdom.
Three year old Edwin W. John is listed as a scholar at home in his parents' home in the 1851 Census. The family were living in Gloster Terrace, Saint Martin, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales. Edwin's father William was recorded as a solicitor's articled clerk. There were five children in the home, along with a domestic servant, and Edwin's unmarried aunt Martha Davies b~1831 in Haverfordwest. [5]
By the time of the 1861 Census, Edwin's mother Mary had died. Edwin was listed living in his father's household in Victoria Place, St Mary, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales. His father was by now working as an Attorney and solicitor. Edwin, the middle of five children, was listed as a scholar. His maternal Aunt, Martha Davies was still in the house. A domestic servant made up the household. [6]
In the 1871 Census, Edwin was still living in the household in Victoria Place, St Mary, Haverfordwest, headed by his father. Like his father, and two brothers in the home, Edwin's listed occupation was solicitor. In the household were four siblings, a sister in law and three nieces/nephews and two servants. [7]
On 3 July 1873, Edwin William John and Augusta Smith married at St Peters Church, Brighton, Sussex, England. Edwin was recorded as solicitor, son of William, also a solicitor. Augusta was recorded as daughter of Thomas Smith (deceased) a lead merchant. Witnesses were Thomas and Fanny Smith. [8]
In the 1881 Census, Edwin and Augusta were listed living in Victoria Place, Haverfordwest St Mary, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales. Edwin's occupation was listed as solicitor. They had four children. Edwin's brother in law Francis Smith, landed proprietor, was also in the home at the time. Three servants made up the household. [9]
Edwin William John and his wife Augusta (née Smith) were the Welsh parents of two famous artists: Gwendolen Mary John (22 June 1876 – 18 September 1939) was a famous Welsh artist who worked in France for most of her career. She was overshadowed during her lifetime by her brother Augustus John.
Gwen John was born in Haverfordwest, Wales, the second of four children of Edwin William John and his wife Augusta (née Smith):
Edwin John was a solicitor whose dour temperament cast a chill over his family, and Augusta was often absent from the children owing to ill health, leaving her two sisters—stern Salvationists—to take her place in the household.
Augusta was an amateur watercolourist, and both parents encouraged the children's interest in literature and art. Her mother died when she was eight years of age.
Regarding her mother's death and the loss of her influence, her brother, Augustus, later wrote: "My mother would no doubt have been helpful, but she died when I was a small child, after, I fear, a very tearful existence."
Following the mother’s premature death in 1884, the family moved to Tenby in Pembrokeshire, Wales, where the early education of Gwen and her sister Winifred was provided by governesses.
It is unsure of the reason but Edwin decided to be baptised[1]at the age of thirty eight, fifteen years after his wedding date and nine years after the birth of his youngest child. The ceremony took place on 7 January 1886 in the parish of St Mary, Tenby, Pembrokeshire. It is noted that the family live in Tenby and Edwin's occupation is a Solicitor.
Edwin passed aged ninety on 7 April 1938 at his home in Lexden Terrace, Tenby and was registered[10][11]during the second quarter of 1938 in the district of Pembroke, Pembrokeshire.
Edwin was laid to rest[12][13]a few days later on 11 April 1938 in the parish of Gumfreston, Pembrokeshire.
Edwin's probate[14][15] was administered in Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales and completed six weeks after his passing on 20 June 1938 detailing effects of £52,416 2s 7d to his son Augustus John, an Artist and Henry Williams, a Solicitor.
