Biography

Thomasine Jane was apparently the owner of Joseph Jane's home (now known as Stuart House) in 1681[1]. She was named in the will of her brother, William Jane[2]. She married Christopher Baron on October 29, 1673, at Botus Fleming[3][4]. Thomasine and Christopher lived at Egloskerry, Cornwall. They had no children that survived to adulthood, as when Christopher died in 1703, he left most of his estate to her and to his brothers, sister, nieces, and nephews[5]. Thomasine made her will in 1707, giving all of her estate, first to her uncle, William Kekewich, for his life, then all to her cousin, James Bolteel. She made several bequeaths to family, friends, and her servants[6]. See her will below.

Research Notes

Her Fathers Property

After the restoration, his wife and children petitioned to have his lands restored and were, at least in part, successful[7]. The petitions they filed shed some light on their situation during the war. Some writings say he and his family were in exile, but the records below contradict that.

  • 1660 July Thomas Jane and four others, children of Joseph Jane, late Clerk of the Council, for a lease of the Barton of Bradridge (part of the manor of Boyton in the Duchy of Cornwall) and other premises named.
  • 1660 August 14 – Sir Philip Warwick to the Attorney General signifying the Treasury Lords assent to the royal warrant for a grant of Liskeard Park, in the Duchy of Cornwall to Thomas, Alice, Mary, and Thomasine children of Joseph Jane late Clerk of the Council, deceased, in consideration of the said Jane's sufferings, the lease to be for 99 years from date hereof and under the like conditions as formerly granted to Sir Warwick Hale. Said royal warrant of date June 22. page 52
  • Treasurer Southampton's report to the King on the petition of the children of Joseph Jane, clerk of the King's Council beyond the seas for several parcels of land, detailed, in the Duchy of Cornwall, in particular the Barton of Bradridge, in consideration of the barbarous usage of their mother by Cromwell's officers whilst her husband was in the King's service abroad: the said Barton of Bradridge being part of the manor of Boyton, lately in lease to Thomas Gewen, concerning who the House of Commons made an order Sept. 5 last. Page 214
  • 1660 Nov 8– Petition from Thomas Johnson, Major to the Duke of Albemarle's regiment of horses (on reference from the King of date 1660, Oct. 25), concerning the manor and demesnes of Liskeard, co. Cornwall purchased by him during the late wars and now granted by the King to Mrs. Jane. Referred: to the Surveyor General of Lands.[Early Entry Book I. P 236] page 33
  • 1661 Nov 11 – Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to Robert Napper, Receiver of the King's revenues in the Dutchy of Cornwall, to pursue a royal warrant of Oct 21 last, remitting to the children of Joseph Jane the fine of 200l. Contracted by them in the name of William Kekewich, in several tenements in the manor of Treworgie and Duchy of Cornwall. Said royal warrant. Page 303
  • Jan 1661/2 Three petitions from Mary Jane for an estate in certain coppice woods in the manor of Liskeard, called Cleaverwood, Highwood, Lady Parke Wood, Coningswood, Doubleboyes and Kellywood, parcel of the Duchy of Cornwall: and for an estate in two small tenements, detailed, in the manor of Boyton: and for an estate in certain coppice woods in the manor of Rillaton and manor of Moresk. Referred: to the surveyor General of Lands [ ibd VII p. 113] page 323

Will of Thomasine Baron of Egloskerry, Cornwall 1707

This is a very lengthy will with names of family members that are not placed. I have broken this down by person and given any additional information that I have been able to find if the relationship is not self-explanatory.

  • To Uncle William Kekewich "my Mothers Brother" all my manor of Bodmyn all my Messuages Land and Tenements rents and various and hereditaments whatsoever situated lying and being in the Burroughs of Liskeard and Bodmyn in the county of Cornwall to have and to hold all that my said Mannor of Bodmyn and all my said Messuages Lands Tenements reversions and hereditaments whatsoever situate lying and being in the Burroughs of Liskeard and Bodmyn. Given for his life with the right to lease for one, two, or three lives.
  • "To my cousin James Bulteele, upon death of Uncle William Kekewich all of the same to him and his heirs forever." also "Peter Ffaulkes clerk cannon of the cathedral church of St Peters Oxon stands bounden unto me in the sume of one thousand pounds for the payment of five hundred pounds of current English money at or upon the nine and twentieth day of September next, I doe give and bequeath unto my said cousin James Bolteele two hundred pounds out of the said sume of five hundred pounds."
    • James Bolteele was the son of Samuel Bolteele and Jane Kekewich.
  • To "my kinsman QVEr(?) Phillip Coad, Doctor of Physick of the Colledge of All Souls within the university of Oxford fifty pounds partell of this sume of five hundred pounds."
    • Have not researched him but her grandmother was a Coode.

Salter Family

  • To "my Brother in law William Salterne, Gentleman a guinea to buy him a ring."
  • I give unto my cousin Christopher Saltern and Thomasine Saltern ten pounds apiece.
  • I give unto my cousin Mary Salterne my silver salter.
    • Christopher Baron named his deceased sister Johan Salteen and gave to her children, John, eldest son of Johan, niece Mary Salteen, nephews John and Christopher, and nieces Margaret and Thomasin. There are no records for the surname Salterne or Salteen, there are records for Salter. There was also a William Salter who married Elizabeth Jane in Sheviock on August 7 1698[8]. A Christopher Salter was baptized in Bodmin in 1689[9]. He was the son of John Salter and Blanche, who were married in Bodmin in 1670[10]. Christopher had a daughter named Thomasine baptized in Bodmin.

The Bennett Family

  • To "my Brother in Law Richard Bennett, Gentleman, a guinea to buy him a ring."
  • To "my sister Bennetts children Robert and Anne ten pounds a piece. Item, I give unto her daughter Thomasine twenty pounds."
  • "All the residue of my goods and chattells, plate and household stuff I give and bequeath unto my uncle William Kekewich and my sister Ann Bennett who I make constitute and appoint my joynt executors of this my last will and testament."
    • Christopher Baron also named his sister Ann Bennett, her son Robert, and daughter Ann in his will (see footnote 4). Their father, John Baron, did not mention a daughter Ann in his will, although his will shows a relationship to the Bennett family and Ann Bennett witnessed the codicil to his will (in 1664), there is nothing to show he had a daughter Ann who was alive when he made his will in 1660 or the codicil in 1664[11]. Parish records of Egloskerry have a christening in 1659 of Ann Baron, daughter of John[12]. Surely he would have provided for a child. Nevertheless, there is a marriage record for Ann Baron and Richard Bennett in Egloskerry in 1697[13]. Christopher didn't mention Richard Bennett. A Richard Bennett and his son Richard Bennett held a lease on land on Barrell Street in Liskeard, apparently adjoining or part of the Jane house (now Stuart House)[14].

  • To "my cousin Jane Hammond, widdow, ten pounds. Item, I give unto her daughter Margarett Hammond, ten pounds. Item, I give unto her daughter Blanch Hammond, ten pounds."
    • Have found nothing on this family
  • To "my cousin Ann Horsman the wife of Mr. Andrew Horsman of Bodmyn, Goldsmith, four pounds".
    • There was an Andrew Horsman who had been mayor of Plymouth. There was an Andrew Horsman in Bodmin. His son Nathaniel was baptized in 1692[15].
  • To "my cousin Honor Jane of Pelint, five pounds. Item I give unto her three sisters Elizabeth Kent, Margarett Grills, and Carolina Jane forty shillings a piece.
    • Were they the daughters of this John Jane? "John Jane, of Minhenniot, co Cornwall, Bach, about 20, his parents dead (consent of his uncle Joseph Jane, of Liskeard sd co, gent., who alleges) & Elizabeth Marten, Spin., 20, dau. of John marten, now or late of Pelynt, ce co. (who consents); at Pelint or Liskeard afsd"[16]
    • Francis Kent of Egloshayle married Elizabeth Jane in Michaelstow Oct 20 1670[17]. Note- The Kekewich family was from Egloshayle. Carlina Jane buried Pelynt march 1723 “attested by Mr. Gryles Rect. Of Lanreath, buried in woolen[18]. Note - This was Richard Grylls. To testify that she was buried in wool, Rector Richard Grylls of Lanreath would have had to be present at the burial[19]. This is also interesting because the sister Margaret had the last name Grills. Was she married to Richard Grylls? There is no marriage record for him (that I have found). In Lanreath, there was an earlier Jane/Grylls marriage.
  • To "Mrs. Dorothy Upton, the wife of Mr. Paul Upton, ten pounds.
    • Paul Upton was a witness to Christopher Baron's will".
  • To "Mr. George Jaye, Lecturer of Egleskerry five pounds".
  • "To the poor housekeepers of the parish of Egleskerry five pounds to be distributed amongst them by executors as they shall think fit".
  • To "my servants Walter Bates, Andrew Rogers, Thomas Vosper and Elizabeth Smith forty shillings apiece (if they be in my service at the time of my decease)".
  • To "my servant Mary Barriball give pounds and a milsh Cow".
    • Christopher Baron named Thomas Vospher and Andrew Bates in his will
  • To "Elizabeth the wife of Thomas Vosper a milsh Cow. Item I give unto her daughter Thomasine Vosper twenty shillings. Robert and John Vosper the sons of my servant Thomas Vosper twenty shillings apiece".
  • To "my servant Elizabeth Simons twenty shillings and the rest of my M___ servants not heretofore named who shall remain in my service at the day of my death I give to every of them twenty shillings".
  • To "Elizabeth Kemp of the Burrough of Liskerd one guinea of gold".
