Caroline (James) Jones AO was born in New South Wales, Australia

Caroline Mary James was born at Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, in 1938, the daughter of Brian James and Nancy Pountney, and grew up in Murrurundi, New South Wales. Her maternal grandfather was Ashley Needham Pountney, editer of several newspapers.

Caroline Mary Newman James married Ross Farr Jones at Sydney, New South Wales in 1958.[1]

They later divorced. Caroline decided to not have a family.

She joined the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) in Canberra in 1963 and later became the first female reporter for This Day Tonight.

Caroline was awarded the AO (Officer of the Order of Australia) in the 1988 Queen's Birthday Honours List for her services to Media.[2]

In 1997, Caroline was voted one of Australia's Living Treasures.

Caroline Mary Newman Jones passed away suddenly, after a fall at her home in Sydney, in 2022.

Only child of Brian Newman James (dec.) and Nancy Rae James (née Pountney) (dec.). Beloved and respected broadcaster, author, storyteller, pioneer of compassionate journalism and trailblazer for female participation.

Caroline will be greatly missed by all those who knew her and loved her. She was a true Australian Living Treasure and inspired in us a love for the country by telling stories to the people of Australia.

Caroline’s contribution and love for Australia lives on in all Australians and she will live on in our hearts and continue to be an inspiration for us all.

A Requiem Mass will be celebrated for Caroline at St Mary’s Church, 264 Miller Street, North Sydney on Monday, 30th May 2022 at 10.00 am.

Anyone who knew Caroline Jones through her broadcasting and writing is welcome to attend.
