Biography

Research Notes

  • There is a long discussion on Geni as to the existence of Urraca. [1]
  • The Peerage has since changed her name and parentage to "Unknown". [2]
  • According to Cawley, the wife of Gozelo I is "Unknown". [3]

  • Here is a snippet of information found on the website A Bit of History. [5]
Urraca of Ivrea – (960 – c1007) Princess of Italy
Urraca was the daughter of Berengar II of Ivrea, King of Italy and his wife Willa of Arles, the daughter of Boso of Arles, Marquis of Tuscany. Her parents were deposed and then imprisoned by the Emperor Otto I (962 – 973) but their children were brought up at the imperial court. Urraca and her sisters Gerberga and Rosala were raised in the household of the Empress Adelaide, the wife of Otto I.
The empress later arranged for Urraca to made a dynastic marriage (c990) with Gozelo I (Gonzelon) (c970 – 1044), Duke of Lower Lorraine and Margrave of Antwerp, a vassal of her grandson Otto III, who was ten years the junior of his bride. Urraca became the duchess consort of Lorraine (c990 – c1007)

Boy is this one a head scratcher. It is very possible this is a "common connection" error. I see this parentage on several websites and in text. Could it be she is not of House Ivrea?
Per https://www.geni.com/discussions/205730, and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berengar_II_of_Italy, Urraca d'Ivrea is not the daughter of Berengar II of Italy or his wife Willa of Toscany. Suggest disconnecting those parents.
Urraca has a brother, Adalbert, who was born 932; and a sister, Rozala, born 936; I think it's more likely that the birthdate is incorrect vs her not being an offspring of Willa. There are many sources that list Urraca as the daughter of King Berengar (Ivrea) d'Italia and Willa (Toscana) Italia. My guess is that her birthdate is confused with when her parents were taken into captivity by Otto I (962 – 973). Thus, her birthdate must be before 962 (and not 965) when her parents were imprisoned. I'm searching for better sources.

I have come across this regarding Urraca's parents captivity: http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/NORTHERN%20ITALY%20900-1100.htm#_Toc442430254 -- Chapter 2, B. MARCHESI di FRIULIA, "UNRUOCHINGI" (family of UNRUOCH); Section: 5. BERENGAR

I think you will find that the dates between Urracca d'Italia b.0966 and her 'mother' Willa (Toscana) Italia b.0912 are too big a difference. It would mean Willa was 54 when Urracca was born, which is well past child bearing years.

I think Urraca's DOB is wrong b/c her sibs were born 30 years earlier. Willa and Berengar were taken into captivity when Otto came into power, so it's unlikely she was born then.
