Alec Henty Houghton was born on 9 Jun 1915 in Brisbane, Queensland. [1] He was the son of Thomas Henty Houghton and his wife Sarah Baker, nee Clarke. [2] He was known as Bill. [3]

Alex enlisted in the Australian Army for overseas service on 31 Jul 1940 at Caulfield as a Private (VX47283). At the time he was single, a store driver, and living at Bunyip, Victoria. He had fair hair and blue eyes. [1]

He was allocated to 2/22nd Bn and disembarked at Rabaul on New Britain in the Territory of New Guinea on 26 Apr 1941. He was appointed A/Cpl on 21 Oct 1941. [1]

When the Japanese invaded in Jan 1942 he was captured on the Wide Bay coast of New Britain and became a Prisoner of War, held at Rabaul. He died on board the "Montevideo Maru" when it was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of the Philippines on 01 Jul 1942, en route from Rabaul to Hainan where he was destined for forced labour. [4]
